Social Network Analysis - April 12

Network analysis is the study of patterns of relations. Social network analysis (SNA) is the study of patterns of human relations. This is a one-day, introductory, hands-on workshop, with examples from social research. Participants in this workshop learn about whole networks (relations within groups) and personal networks (relations surrounding individuals). Whole networks are analyzed using UCINET and NetDraw; personal networks are analyzed using EgoWeb 2.0, a modified version of the software Egonet, is desgined to enable collection of personal as well as whole networks and is open source and freely available (egoweb.info). Free short-term demos of these programs are available.

David Kennedy is a senior social / behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation and is currently the co-director of the RAND Center for Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Research. He has over 15 years of experience conducting primary data collection across a wide range of applied topic areas. Kennedy’s research focus is on the social and cultural context of behavior and health outcomes. He has a wide range of methodological interests with a primary specialty in the collection and analysis of personal networks. Kennedy has been leading the development of a program called EgoWeb 2.0 since 2009. EgoWeb 2.0 is designed to enable collection of personal as well as whole networks and is open source and freely available (egoweb.info). The software is being used by researchers worldwide across a range of disciplines, including health, management, criminal justice, and education. Kennedy has used EgoWeb 2.0 across a variety of projects including substance use and HIV risk among homeless populations, formation of networks of newlywed couples, caregiving of older adults with dementia. Kennedy has also used EgoWeb 2.0 to facilitate a behavior change intervention with homeless populations transitioning into housing programs.
