Bring your laptop and smart phone to this hands on full day workshop, designed to introduce participants to social media data and the basic methods for collecting, filtering, and analyzing social media data using Twitter, a leading social media platform as an example. Participants will learn different ways to collect Twitter data and what data is included in each social media post or tweet, including how to extract geospatial information from tweets. In this hands-on workshop, participants will use simple programs and existing tools to collect and filter their own Twitter data (you may set up a Twitter account on your phone in advance of the workshop or during the workshop). Participants will learn how to use basic textual and spatial methods and strategies to import these data into yourfavorite software for further analysis. We will also discuss issues surrounding the use of soical media data including privacy and dealing with noisy data.
