Analyzing Video as Qualitative Data

Video can capture a subtle, multi-layered record of situations and environments we observe and study. It captures not only what is said but how it is said, actions and reactions, the appearance of the environment and individuals and how they interact, and so much more.  This workshop will focus on techniques for analyzing video and audio data in all of its nuance and richness.

Topics for the workshop will include when to transcribe and when not to, different analytic options for transcription, the categorization and coding of media data, and making sense of coded media data. We will also delve into advanced topics including working with multiple simultaneous media files, using multiple simultaneous transcripts to analyze layers in video data, options for team research and collaboration with media data, and using qualitative analysis of data as a powerful technique to teach theoretical content.

The discussion will be illustrated with examples from a variety of research. Much of the discussion will be sofware-agnostic to the extent possible, although some of the advanced techniques to be covered are only supported in Transana.  The software and sample data will also be provided for participants who desire a grounded, hands-on approach, so please bring your laptop.

Presenter, Dr. David K. Woods, Transana.com

For the past 18 years, David Woods has studied the needs of researchers and has worked to create tools that help researchers get the most out of complex data.  He develops and publishes Transana, software for the qualitative analysis of video, audio, text, and image data. Transana has a particular emphasis on the analysis of video, and includes a number of unique tools that have been developed to meet the special needs of researchers working with media data.
